Non digital moment —— Navigate in the darkness

Reliving his life once more, a time and place that I could never have experienced, now comes to me,burning on my body.

Shijie Jin, Documentary: Where I come from

Dragon bone

Because of my hometown's geography near to Southeast Asia, many individuals have made a living in Southeast Asia for a long time. This link became more common in the 19th and 20th centuries when Western colonisation brought more work opportunities to Southeast Asia, and many Chinese people travelled there to make a living, including my great-grandfather. In this context, darkness represents something unknown to them, a sensation of insecurity, the future, an ocean, or a letter. I also created a short novel ‘Earthquake’ about this topic, but it’s more focused on the story of the women who remained in their homeland on this period.

Surnames are also passed down in the process. Many surnames like Chen in Southeast Asia have taken on many versions of spelling because nationalism, colonisation, and the various dialects of China. These variations on the spelling of the surname are an excellent example of how capital, rights, and language all play a role in the construction of identity.

A friend from Vietnam, her surname is Tran, which is another spelling of Chen that comes from the Chaoshan dialect. Chaoshan is also my Chinese hometown.

Fragment

My previous work also refers to a relationship with family.

Fragment is a work about my grandfather's death.

I connected my grandfather's stuff with images of my body in this work to develop a linkage about legacy between object and gene.

A digital moment that reveals its shortcomings —— weather forecast

The modern home can be said to be a phantasmagoric place, to the extent that electronic media of various kinds allow the radical intrusion of distant events into the space of domesticity. —— Home Territories : Media, Mobility and Identity, Taylor & Francis Group, 2000.

The place of this work is on the first floor in the kitchen which is a dynamic place.

The kitchen is a home area and a daily space for the women in the household. Sculptures of clouds and daily objects are placed in it as a location of link between everyday life and the weather forecast. These models also refer to the importance of weather models as the starting condition for weather forecasting.
